 Prescription Hair loss Medications:

  • Finasteride: works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is known to shrink hair follicles in individuals with a genetic predisposition to hair loss
  •  Minoxidil: promote hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles and prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle.
  • Melatonin:  a potent antioxidant and hair growth modulator.
  • ketoconazole:  possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce scalp inflammation associated with certain types of hair loss.
  • Latanoprost: prostaglandin analog that work by extending the growth phase of the hair follicles
  • Spironolactone: help by reducing the impact of androgens (male hormones) on hair follicles
  • Azelaic acid: has anti-androgenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and hair growth-promoting properties

PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) Scalp Injections

A procedure that involves using a person's own blood to stimulate hair growth. PRP contains concentrated platelets, growth factors, and other bioactive substances that have been shown to stimulate dormant hair follicles and encourage hair growth.

The exact number of PRP sessions required varies depending on the individual and the severity of hair loss. Typically, multiple sessions are recommended, with intervals of several weeks between each session.

Red light therapy

Red light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses red and near-infrared light to stimulate cell function. Light energy penetrates the scalp and stimulates hair follicles, promoting hair growth. It is believed to enhance circulation, reduce inflammation, and stimulate cellular metabolism in the hair follicles, leading to improved hair growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hair loss can occur for a number of reasons, but the most common form of male and female pattern baldness is genetic. Simply put, some people are more susceptible to the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen that binds to hair follicles and causes them to shrink.  Other factors can contribute to hair loss as well. Things like stress, poor nutrition or certain medical problems can lead to thinning hair, so it’s important to determine the underlying cause to ensure effective treatment. Dr. Jason Wang and his team can help you understand why you’re experiencing hair loss and develop an effective solution for restoring a thicker, fuller head of hair.

You should not use Topical Finasteride if you or your partner is planning to get pregnant, is pregnant or breastfeeding. Finasteride is a category X and should be avoided by pregnant patients and their partners.

While it is generally well-tolerated, like any medication, finasteride can cause side effects in some individuals. Topical formations tend to have less possible side effects:

  • sexual dysfunction
  • breast tenderness
  • allergic reactions
  • mood changes
  • testicular pain
  • changes in PSA level

It's important to note that while these side effects are possible, most patients will not experience them.
